The Programme Director and Coordinator of the Mano River Union Internet Governance Forum (MRU IGF), Peterking Quaye, has paid a courtesy call on the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) as part of ongoing preparations for the 3rd Annual MRU IGF 2026 and the inaugural Mano River Union School on Internet Governance and Emerging Technologies (MRU SIG 2026).
The courtesy engagement provided an opportunity to formally brief the LTA on preparations for the MRU Digital Governance Week 2026, scheduled for 15–22 September 2026 in Liberia, and to further strengthen collaboration between the MRU IGF Secretariat and the national telecommunications regulator. During the engagement, Quaye formally acquainted Commissioner Angela Cassell Bush and the LTA with the MRU SIG 2026 initiative, which will take place from 17–19 September 2026 in Monrovia and bring together selected professionals and emerging digital leaders from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire.
MRU SIG will focus on Internet Governance, AI governance, cybersecurity, data protection and privacy, Digital Public Infrastructure, telecommunications, digital rights, digital inclusion and emerging technologies. Speaking on the engagement, Peterking Quaye, Programme Director of MRU SIG and Coordinator of the MRU IGF, said the visit was intended to strengthen institutional coordination and ensure that Liberia’s key digital-sector institutions are closely engaged in the regional programme. “The LTA is a critical institution in Liberia’s digital ecosystem, and its participation is important to the success of both MRU SIG and the MRU IGF. We want to ensure that our national institutions are not only informed about these regional initiatives, but are active contributors to the conversations shaping the digital future of the Mano River Union.”
Quaye further highlighted the importance of MRU SIG as a new regional capacity-building platform.
“MRU SIG is designed to connect professionals and young people with practical knowledge, regional expertise and international perspectives. Our ambition is to develop a community of digital governance leaders who can contribute to policy, regulation, cybersecurity, innovation and digital transformation across the MRU region.”
Commissioner Angela Cassell Bush, who oversees International Gateway Services and Internet Governance at the LTA, welcomed the engagement and the opportunity for the Authority to participate in the regional initiative. Commissioner Bush noted the importance of creating opportunities for professionals to exchange knowledge and strengthen their understanding of the rapidly changing digital environment. The LTA’s engagement is particularly relevant to MRU SIG given the Authority’s role in telecommunications regulation, Internet Governance, connectivity and Liberia’s wider digital transformation agenda.
The Secretariat is exploring opportunities for LTA professionals and technical experts to participate in the School, including through Faculty engagement, resource contributions and staff participation. The engagement comes as Liberia prepares to host the 3rd Annual MRU IGF from 21–22 September 2026, bringing together policymakers, regulators, parliamentarians, technical experts, civil society, academia, private-sector representatives, youth and other stakeholders from across the Mano River Union. The broader MRU Digital Governance Week 2026 will provide a coordinated platform for capacity building, youth participation, parliamentary engagement and multistakeholder Internet Governance dialogue.
The MRU IGF Secretariat views the continued engagement of the LTA as important to ensuring that Liberia’s hosting of these regional initiatives contributes to stronger national capacity, deeper regional cooperation and a more inclusive, secure and resilient digital future for the Mano River Union.
